About the curriculum

I want to invite you into the lives of Adriana, Bruno and Carla.

Starting with the basics of reading, you will venture into Spanish through story. You will discover how to conjugate verbs in Spanish while reading about historical figures and cultural holidays. You will learn how nouns, pronouns and adjectives work together as you follow Adriana, Bruno and Carla through difficulties and adventures.

The course is broken into 36 lessons. Each lesson starts with a story from one of our three characters and serves as the foundation for the rest of the lesson. Accompanying audio is provided through the online resource page, which allows you to engage with the story through listening and reading aloud.

New vocabulary is introduced with each story and by the end of the course, you will have learned over 700 words. Audio vocabulary lists are provided so that you can hear the correct pronunciation of each word.

Grammar is taught incrementally, accompanied by activities to reinforce what you're learning. As you near the end of the course, you will be given a few writing assignments, the largest of which is an in-person interview with a Spanish-speaking person.

Whether you're a homeschool parent wanting to give your child a jump-start on their second (or third or fourth?) language, a high school teacher wanting to make Spanish class more engaging, or just a self-motivated person aspiring to learn Spanish, I want to extend a warm welcome to you!

Meet the Characters

Three lives, three stories, one shared journey through New York City.

Adriana Castro introducing herself

Adriana Castro

Marcabelí, Ecuador → New York City

Adriana grew up in a small pueblo near Machala, Ecuador, where her teacher Liliana saw her potential and invited her to the city for a better education. A tragic accident shattered her academic dreams, and she returned to her birthplace — New York City — to help pay off family debts.

Bruno Cruz introducing herself

Bruno Cruz

Monterrey, Mexico → New York City

Bruno grew up in a prosperous upper-middle-class family in Monterrey. His parents poured into his education and personal growth. After high school he flew to New York City to pursue medicine — but the unknowns and the distance from home leave him searching for friendship.

Carla Diaz introducing herself

Carla Diaz

Bogotá, Colombia → New York City

Carla was raised by a single mother in Fontibón, a Bogotá neighborhood bordering El Dorado International Airport. Her determination and bright mind set her apart, and through a series of seeming coincidences she found herself headed to a renowned New York flight school to chase her dream of becoming a pilot.

Ian Miller, author of Español con Adriana, Bruno y Carla

Hello, my name is Ian Miller!

When I was eleven, my parents moved to Mexico to help start an orphanage in Sinaloa. I learned Spanish playing soccer on the streets, biking the neighborhood doing family errands, and helping out at the orphanage. In my teenage years, I started teaching Spanish and grew in my love for this beautiful language. I love finding ways to make complex concepts simple to understand — and Spanish verb tenses are one of my favorites! I currently live in Elmhurst, New York with my wife and two daughters.
